Kevin was born and raised in Yorkshire, in the heart of the brass band world. His father and grandfather were both trombone players and it was a natural progression therefore that at the age of 6, Kevin began playing.
By the age of 11 Kevin was solo trombone of the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band and competed at his first British Open Championships. He continued with Carlton Main for a number of years whilst also persuing an interest in the Jazz and orchestral fields, playing for the National Youth Orchestra and a number of Symphony Orchestras.
In 1978 Kevin was approached by James Shepherd to join his world famous Versatile Brass, playing alongside not just James, but other brass band legends such as Gordon Higginbottom, David Moore, Steve Thornton, David Horsfield, Graham Walker, Billy Miller, Brian Evans... the list is long and distinguished.
In addition to playing for Versatile Brass, in 1979 he was appointed as Solo Trombone of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. He continued to combine these roles for a number of years. With the demise of the coal industry and the closure of the colliery at Grimethorpe in 1991, Kevin was appointed as a trustee of the band, a role he performed for over 10 years.
In 1994, Kevin became a member of the illustrious collection of brass band legends that formed the Kings of Brass. The line-up of the band was a real 'Who's Who' of the brass band movement with every member having been part of a band that had won the British Open and the National Championships of Great Britain. In order for Kevin to play in the band, one of the key rules was waived in that he was the only member of the band under the age of 40.
Since leaving Grimethorpe, Kevin has played as a frelance trombone player with a number of Championship brass bands. He is also in demand as a lead trombone with a number of jazz big bands in the Midlands. During the day he is an instrumental brass teacher in Derbyshire, and combines this with composing and arranging.
